BHDL Is Looking For Writers

Written by Andrew Bernier on .

Believe it or not, BHDL still exists.  I know some of you may have forgotten that since this offseason has been so boring.  There really hasn't been much to write about in the last few weeks, but fear not, hockey season will be in full swing before you know it.

Once the season gets going again, we'll be super busy.  So busy, in fact, that we're looking to add another writer to the site.  Since all of our writers are real people with real lives and real jobs (and I totally swear ChiBlackhawks isn't just a drone we created in the basement of the BHDL offices), we're looking to bring in another person to share in the writing duties.

So if you want to write for BHDL here's what you need:

  • A love for all things Blackhawks hockey.
  • A desire to write and discuss the Hawks.

That's it! We're not too picky around here.  If you have any of the following skills, it would be a big plus:

  • Basic photoshop skills.
  • Ideas for weekly features.
  • Availability to watch and write about weekend games is huge.
  • Original jokes about Patrick Kane.  We're running a little low over here.
  • Ability to put a sentence together.
  • Passion for creating lists using bullet points.

So if you're interested, send me an email at BlackhawksDL *at* gmail dot com.  We'll give you a tryout on the big stage and you'll be able to see your name published on the interwebz!

NHL 12 Legends Featuring Chelios, Gretzky, Lemieux, and More

Written by Andrew Bernier on .

Via our friends at Puck Daddy, comes news that EA Sports will be featuring some legendary hockey players in this year's installment of NHL.

Aside from Gretzky, there's a Detroit Red Wing rubbing out Milan Lucic. Steve Yzerman, perhaps?
A Chicago Blackhawks defenseman with the number 7? No doubt Chris Chelios.
And finally, we get a glimpse of a Pittsburgh Penguin from the knees down making a Boston Bruins defenseman look silly. Appears like Mario Lemieux replaying his famous goal against Ray Bourque.
As far as who else might be the Legends group, on the XBOX achievements page for NHL 12, "Russian Rocket" and "Mr. Hockey" are listed, a strong clue that Pavel Bure and Gordie Howe will be part of the bunch.

Fotoshop Friday: SHARP WEEK

Written by Kelly Thomas Reardon on .

In honor of Patrick Sharp signing a 5-year extension with the Blackhawks during Shark Week, we here at BHDL had nothing better to do than declare it SHARP WEEK on the blog. So today, we present a Fotoshop Friday consisting solely of our "breathtaking" Patrick Sharp.

For All You Rec League Hockey Players: Check out TeamSnap

Written by Kelly Thomas Reardon on .

Hey everyone, I don't usually double post like this, but I feel this is relevant since I've talked about rec league hockey in my Stories of a Bender series before. I run a blog with the Examiner about Tech & Gadgets and I just did a huge piece on TeamSnap, a tool that helps you manage every aspect of your rec league team. Just thought I'd throw up a link here so if you're looking for help running your rec league team, you could check it out.

Team management with TeamSnap and an interview with their CEO, Dave DuPont

Sharp Week: Five more years of Patrick Sharp

Written by ChiBlackhawks on .

Ganked from... somewhere on Tumblr?
Appropriate gif is appropriate.

Thanks to @nolanmorris for the idea.

The Blackhawks just announced today that Patrick Sharp has been inked to a five-year extension, making him a Hawk through 2017.

In honor of this signing, and also in part because we're heading into the dreaded hockey drought of August, and I've never cared much for sharks anyway, let's make the rest of the week Sharp Week.

I... don't actually know what Sharp Week is about, but! Here, have a video:

And share your favorite Sharp moment!

ETA: According to Bob McKenzie the annual cap hit for his deal is $5.9m. I can live with this.

Days Of Yorr Re-Imagines The Blackhawks

Written by Andrew Bernier on .

Our Bruins blogging buddies at Days of Y'orr are running a series of posts this month that takes a look at the uniforms of all 30 NHL teams and changes them all up.  Today they ran their Blackhawks re-design.  Kelly and I got a chance to see them earlier in the week and our comments are included on the post.  I'll let you take a glimpse at the home jerseys here, but you have to click the link over to DOY to check out the full deal (including a wild third jersey that is black, white, and red.)

Emery Gets Try-Out With Blackhawks

Written by Andrew Bernier on .

This pretty much sums up how happy I am about this.

According to ESPN, Ray Emery will be given a try out with the Hawks during camp.  This is some pretty awesome news.  I've really liked Emery for a while now.  The guy is a bit eccentric and has had some attitude problems in the past.  Honestly though, I wouldn't want to show up if I had to play goalie for the Senators either.

Emery was recovering from a devastating hip injury for most of the past two seasons (we could've been facing him in the SCF instead of Leighton).  He came back at the end of last year for the Ducks when Jonas Hiller hit the floor.  All in all, he played pretty well for them.

Desperate For Any Hockey

Written by Andrew Bernier on .

I haven't gotten out of bed yet today.  I am 100% serious.  I'd post a picture to prove it if that wasn't so creepy.  But its 1 PM and I'm still in bed because what's the point of getting out of bed today?  There is nothing going on.  NOTHING.  Hockey is dead at the moment.  All the writers are on vacation.  News about Jassen Cullimore got a boat load of retweets.  This is not a world I wish to live in.

So I hope to give you some videos and links and such that will whet your apetite for the time being.  Also, if anyone wants to play some NHL 11 for Xbox, my username is FourthFeather (Warning: I'm really good so don't feel bad if I destroy you).

Donate Money to a Worthy Cause and Get an Opportunity to Troll The Red Wings

Written by Kelly Thomas Reardon on .

Everybody feels good donating to charity. And every Blackhawks fan loves trolling Detroit and the Red Wings. Good friend of the blog and Malort-drinker extraordinaire Fork from Hockeenight.com emailed me a couple of days ago about an opportunity to hopefully accomplish both.

The boys over at Wings blog The Winged Wheel have started a donation drive for Learning Through Giving, which helps improve and provide for our Chicago underserved schools. If this hasn't enticed you enough to donate (it should, you cold heartless jerk), there's more. As I said, TWW have a drive going and they have prizes. In their own words, here's how you enter the contest:

How Can I Donate?

  • Go to the Learning Through Giving Cause Page, join the cause through Facebook, and donate to your heart's content. As the administrator, Mike will record your donation, and secure your entry.
  • If you aren't all hip with the Facebooks, or you just don't want to use it for some reason, you can make a direct donation through the Learning Through Giving Cause Page, without signing in. If you do that, however, you'll need to send your information and the amount you donated to me at  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so that we can record your entry.
  • You can also send a check made out to Genesis Therapy Center (put Schools Program in the Memo line) at the following address:

Genesis Therapy Center
6006 W. 159th St, Bldg. C
Oak Forest, IL 60452
(Again, if you choose to donate this way, send me an  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to confirm your entry)

All payments are completely secure, and all donations are Tax Deductible. If you'd like a receipt, just email me and I'll make sure that happens for you.
All entries before puck drop for the Wings season opener on October 7th against Paul MacLean's moustache will be entered into the contest.
Email me or inquire on the twitters (@captnorris5) if you have any questions. Also, if you've got something to donate to raffle off as well to sweeten the pot and help entice even more good deeds, shoot me an email and we can put it up.

So, what's the prize you ask? Again, in TWW's own words:

The Winged Wheel's "Who's Got the Biggest Charity Boner" Contest
You know, or whatever else you want to call it, in the interest of appropriateness.
For all those who donate, join the cause, or recruit others, you'll be entered into a raffle for a Red Wings Jersey, signed by Henrik Zetterberg shown at the top of this post.
A couple of years ago, at H2H, I was lucky enough to win this bad lad as a raffle prize. It's made its appearance at one exhibition game, but has otherwise sat in a revered corner of my closet. Well, I'm confident it can be put to better use, and what better use than this?
Everyone who joins and passes along the information to others will get an entry into the raffle. PLUS, you'll also get an entry for every dollar you so generously choose to contribute. By following the links below, you can donate any amount.
AS AN ADDED BONUS: For the individual who donates the highest amount, I'll throw in the following:

  • The Winged Wheel will change it's banner to one of your design for three months. You can have it proclaim your glory, honor your favorite player, or hell - if you're a fan of a rival team that would like revenge for all the mean things I say about you - you can even have it pay tribute to your inferior, crappy excuse for a hockey program. The only limitations are that I won't mock Stevie or Vladdy. Everyone else is fair game.
  • I'll also do my damndest to write and record a Winged Wheel original song, based on the topic of your choice. Same idea as above - it can be about anything. It should be noted, that I make absolutely no guarantee that the song itself will consist of anything resembling talent or ability - but hell, I'll try my best.

Sounds pretty enticing, eh? Think about it. Your neighborhood bum in a Zetterburg jersey? Maybe laying the jersey out over a puddle for a young lady to step on so she doesn't ruin her shoes? Getting your say of what goes on the banner at a well-read Wings blog? A SONG? C'mon guys, let's get on this. If you'd like the full scoop, please visit the post at The Winged Wheel and please, be generous and open up your wallets and purses for this worthy cause.

Thanks again to Fork for passing this info onto us and to Greg at TWW for starting the contest and putting up a nice prize.

Paddy Lalime Is Taking His Awesome Masks And Going Home

Written by Andrew Bernier on .

Lalime MaskPhoto via Puck Daddy

Patrick Lalime is leaving the NHL to become an analyst for RDS in Canada.  Paddy played 2 seasons for the Blackhawks where he backed up Khabibulin (which was just like a starting job thanks to Khabi's groin).  The Lime had a .891 Save Percentage over the course of 44 games between 2006-07 and 07-08.

He'll go down in the history books as a serviceable backup who had a really awesome mask with Marvin the Martian on it.  Senator fans will remember him as ONE OF THE BEST GOALIES IN SENS HISTORY.  BHDL would like to wish the best of luck to Lalime on the golf course and in the booth.
